Since from the 1920 the Italian national rugby union side have been playing international rugby and are categorized, by the International Rugby Board, as a tier one nation. They compete in the Six Nations Championship, which they were first included in during 2000, though they have yet to win the competition. The team has thus far, competed at all the Rugby World Cups. Italy's performed very well in the Worldcup 2007 and they have shown their best effords as well as team work in World Cup 2007 tournament.They won two of their four pool matches and lost by two points to Scotland, missing the quarter-finals by three points. 2010 will be a very tough year for the Azzuri with three of their 6 Nations matches being away from home.
On St Valentine's Day 2010, Italy lost narrowly to England in Rome (12-17), further consolidating Italy's rise in international rugby.
Italy also has a national sevens side.
